The Islanders will be without their top goaltender for at least a few games.
New York placed goalie Ilya Sorokin on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 20 On Saturday, the team announced. In a corresponding move, the Islanders recalled Marcus Hogberg from AHL Bridgeport.
Sorokin has not played since Dec. 19 against the Canucks, when he was run into by Vancouver forward Jake DeBrusk in a 4-1 loss. The Islanders have not disclosed the specifics of Sorokin's or his timetable to return.
Islanders backup goalie David Rittich has given up just three goals in New York's last two games without Sorokin.
Hogberg has not suited up for the Islanders this season, having gone 2-6-3 last year with a 3.38 GAA in 15 games.
The Islanders host the Rangers on Saturday night in a battle of New York.
